The Beavers pass well, they guard better, and they don’t make a whole lot of mistakes and aren’t wasting their possessions.

Oklahoma State has the talent, and it has Cade Cunningham to potentially take over, but the offense turns the ball over a whole bunch and the defense isn’t tight enough. Oregon State is hitting 48% or before from the field in five of its last six games, and the momentum and great play are about to continue.

Oklahoma State took down Liberty 79–70 in the opening round behind 21 points from sophomore guard Avery Anderson. Cade Cunningham came alive in the second half to finish with 15 points and Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds for the Cowboys in the win.

Mike Boynton’s squad comes into the second round slotted at №29 in the latest KenPom rankings. Oklahoma State has scored 109.9 points per 100 possessions for the season (57th in the NCAA) and 102.9 points per 100 possessions versus Big 12 teams (seventh in the Big 12).

The Cowboys have turned the ball over 21.3 percent of the time (293rd in the NCAA), which has limited their efficiency on offense. But they have been able to make up points by crashing the offensive glass (59th in the NCAA) and getting to the free-throw line (48th in the NCAA).

On defense, Oklahoma State has given up 90.5 points per 100 possessions for the season (18th in the NCAA) and 99.1 points per 100 possessions versus Big 12 opponents (first in the Big 12).

The 69–60 win over Liberty was hardly normal for the high-powered Cowboys. They scored 70 or more each of their last nine games and was only under the mark four times on the year — they won two of them.

It was hardly the best performance by OSU, but it pulled away when it had to, it was solid on the move in the second half, and it overcame an uncharacteristically bad day from three to move on. The Cowboys don’t have to hit from the outside to win, but when they’re on, forget it.

They’ll have to be more creative and keep things moving a bit more against the Oregon State three point defense, but it’ll be the glass that gets it done. The Beavers are good on the boards, but the Cowboys are better, and …

Wayne Tinkle has guided Oregon State to an impressive 18–12 overall record, including a 10–10 record in PAC-12 play. The Beavers have been one of the hottest teams in the nation down the stretch of the season. They have won seven of their last eight games with six quality wins during that span. On Sunday, the PAC-12 Champions will play in their seventh consecutive Tier-A game.

Oregon State has scored 110.0 points per 100 possessions for the season (55th in the NCAA) and 102.5 points per 100 possessions during conference play (seventh in the PAC-12). The Beavers haven’t shot the ball well from inside the arc this season, knocking down just 46.9 percent of their two-point shots (275th in the NCAA).

However, they’ve been able to make up for that by taking care of the basketball (94th in the NCAA) and knocking down 75.7 percent of their free-throw attempts as a team (38th in the NCAA).

On defense, Oregon State has given up 98.0 points per 100 possessions for the season (98th in the NCAA) and 105.7 points per 100 possessions for the year (9th in the PAC-12). The Beavers have excelled at defending the 3-ball, limiting opponents to just 30.9 percent shooting from 3-point range (40th in the NCAA).

The defense that locked down in the Pac-12 Tournament on the way to the championship got the job down in the 70–56 win over Tennessee by doing what it does best — locking down the three.

This was the best defensive team in the Pac-12 from the outside, and the Vols ran into that all making just 19% of its chances as the Beavers went wire-to-wire with no drama whatsoever.

The D is creating a whole lot of easy chances on the other end, the passing is great — the Beavers came up with 20 assists — and the team has the ability to slow down what Oklahoma State wants to do and make this a grind.

How good has the Oregon State defense been? It’s 14–4 when hold teams to 70 points or fewer, and it’s been able to do that each of the last three games and in eight of the last ten games.

The red-hot Beavers will try to pull off another upset against the highly-touted Cowboys, who have won nine of their last 11 games. Led by likely â„–1-overall pick Cade Cunningham, all eyes will be on Oklahoma State during its NCAA Tournament run.

The Cowboys were able to avoid an upset against Liberty in the first round but could have their hands full against another major conference opponent.
